PERFORMANCE DUTONE GRIP 3 D/LAB WAVE BOARD
Everyone strives to be different and that's why they love individualization. But do you want to buy a surprise egg, like custom boards often turn out to be? Or do you want to rely on a proven shape from a brand that has consistently been at the forefront of board development with over 40 years of experience? Look no further because here comes the D/LAB GRIP board range. At DUOTONE, only truly game-changing products qualify to carry the D/LAB logo. So, what's so special about these boards that allows them to become the first D/LAB products from DUOTONE Windsurfing? For the past three years, our Product Manager, Dani Aeberli, and our Quality Control Specialist, Vasin Siritho, have been working on a new technology exclusive to DUOTONE. We call this the CUSTOM CNC SANDWICH. We use a construction 100% identical to the highest-end custom boards. Instead of using a mold to give the EPS foam core its final shape, each EPS block is CNC-milled. This ensures maximum precision and saves weight. As with high-end custom board manufacturers, the main advantage lies in the processing. We call this UNIQUE PROCESS TECHNOLOGY, and it's the key to our industry-leading strength-to-weight ratio. Instead of combining work steps to save time and money, each step follows its own individual process. So, for example, instead of joining the PVC sandwich with the EPS core in one go, we vacuum-pack the top and bottom PVC shields with the EPS core separately. Additionally, instead of using standard 3 mm PVC elements for the entire board, we use thicker and thinner PVC panels depending on the stress areas, making the board lighter yet stronger. For all D/LAB boards, we use our most sophisticated layout, consisting of over 60 individual parts and components (almost 20% more parts than those used for our SLS Premium Sandwich construction). In addition, we use the highest-quality composite materials available to date. All carbon fibers used are a blend of high-strength and high-modulus carbon qualities depending on the individual requirements of each board section. Our high-modulus carbon can also be found in high-end products such as airplanes, Formula 1 cars, or our Platinum SLS masts, booms, and extensions. Innegra is a high-modulus propylene with unbeatable tensile and shock resistance. It offers similar tensile strength to Kevlar but is significantly stiffer. Innegra is also the best composite fiber for preventing dents. We use our exclusive high-performance S_GLASS+ with an extra-high silica content that offers much higher tensile strength as well as 10-20% greater stiffness. And finally, we are using our exclusive DUOTONE SENTEX resin infused with silicon nanospheres, which helps us further reduce weight without sacrificing durability. Instead of using a similar layout across all boards, we use a DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC FLEX CONSTRUCTION for all our D/LAB boards, as the demands placed on them by different disciplines (wave, freestyle, freeride, racing) and conditions vary greatly. Race boards are built for maximum performance (instant acceleration and V-max). Therefore, these boards need to be as stiff as possible. To achieve this uncompromising stiffness, we use a super-high carbon content in all FALCON D/LAB layers. On wave boards, however, some "give" is essential, as these boards are very short and can become too stiff, making them uncontrollable with a full carbon layup. Therefore, GRIP D/LAB boards come with a higher content of Innegra and S_GLASS+. These high-tech compounds have a much higher tensile strength, preventing breakage after high landings. To achieve excellent "springback" characteristics that make the board more reactive and have a tremendous effect on acceleration, we use unidirectional carbon reinforcements in the longitudinal direction. Last but not least, each board size has an individual layup. This is the final stage of individualization in construction. The result speaks for itself, as D/LAB boards are approximately 500 grams lighter than our SLS boards and up to a kilo lighter than other series-production boards. And it's the first time a production board can compete with even the lightest custom boards out there. However, all of this is achieved without sacrificing durability, as we always follow our main motto: LIGHT DONE RIGHT. Please note that, at least for the first year, quantities will be strictly limited, just like with a real custom board. That's why only the most popular sizes GRIP 4 and GRIP 3 will be available in D/LAB technology.
SHAPE DETAILS
Our D/LAB GRIP boards are constantly evolving in design and construction to ensure we're continually at the forefront of development with over 40 years of experience. We call them World Cup wave boards because they're designed to satisfy the best of the best in all types of spots around the world, from jump-oriented conditions like Pozo to bottom-heavy swells like Hookipa.
Now the most important question you need to ask yourself is which fin setup best suits your personal riding style: The GRIP 3 D/Lab has slightly improved acceleration thanks to an efficient rocker with lower entry resistance, which is especially useful in jump conditions. The Thruster fin configuration allows for earlier tail release for tighter/slasher turns, even in less-than-ideal waves.
